Registration and Activation for New Users of the magicJack 2014

After a great deal of fiddling around, I’ve come up with a video that shows what to expect for people who have never registered a magicJack device before. This is a recipe for those who bought it online or over the phone from magicJack, or bought it on Amazon, at a local retailer or were given the device as a gift. Below are the directions I created for the device.

This video shows you the least expensive way to register a magicJack plus 2014, avoiding all cost-related upsell attempts. Your experience may vary, but you’ll get a flavor for what to avoid and what is worth while.

  1. First make sure you have all the components necessary when you remove it from the packaging:
    • magicJack plus 2014 (new – not activated or registered already, of course.)
    • usb extension cable
    • AC adapter wart
    • A good Ethernet cable
    • You’ll also need a modern corded or cordless phone.
    • Don’t use the ethernet cable that came with the device. It gets stuck. It’s very hard to remove this cable from any ethernet socket, and you could damage a socket on your magicJack or your router if you try using it. Instead, buy a cheap ethernet cable locally or make your own. You may have an old one lying around from some other device you’re not using. Any alternative retail ethernet cable is probably kinder on your hardware than the one that came with the magicJack.
  2. While the directions suggest you can plug the device directly into the router, I suggest using the USB method. It’s more likely to succeed.
  3. Plug the magicJack into a USB port on your computer. You should see an “AutoPlay” popup dialog box asking you to start magicJack. It may look a little different on a Mac. Click “Start magicJack”. Some USB ports are unpowered, so if you don’t see the AutoPlay dialog box come up, you may need to try a different USB port. It may take a minute. You should see the “lucky you” update screen followed by trite sales phrases, then this screen:
  4. The whole left third of the dialpad is ordinarily devoted to upsell schemes most of the time, but at this point, you should see a welcome screen. Click where it says “Click here”.
  5. The registration box pops up, offering two ways to register: We can create a new account or register with the account we used when we bought the device direct from magicJack. We’ll start with the first method, creating a new account. If you are logging in with the email you used to buy the device online, skip to step 8.
  6. To create a new account, type in your first and last name along with a valid email address. You’ll need that address later to activate the account. Click “Submit”.
  7. Enter your physical address on the next screen. The phone number is optional. Click “Next”. Skip to step 11.
  8. At this point, it’s a good time to show the second method of logging in. Instead of creating an account, we’ll use an existing account. Then we can continue the registration processes both methods have in common.
  9. Instead of creating a new account, click the login link. Use the same email address and password that you used when you bought the magicJack. If you don’t know your password, you can get it on line by using the “remind me” link.
  10. Now that we’ve finished the second account login method, we can continue with the processes both login methods have in common.
  11. Enter a name for your magicJack plus 2014. Make it useful. For instance if it’s a second home line, call it home 2.
  12. You’ll be presented with a Terms of Service Contract. While most people don’t want to read small print, I suggest it’s a good idea to read closely what you’re agreeing to. Once you have, check “I have read and agree to the Terms of Service.” Click “Next”.
  13. By default the checkbox at the bottom of the next screen is checked. Leave it checked. Select the option “I do not want a Vanity or Canadian number, etc.”
  14. Using the pulldown menus in box 1 on the next screen select your preferred state, area code and exchange. Once you’ve selected your preferred exchange, box 2 will appear with an option for a three-dollar per year upsell.
  15. Select the gray button that says “No Thanks. I want the last four digits assigned automatically.”
  16. You may want replacement insurance. I didn’t. Select the check box next to “No I do NOT want $1 magicJack Insurance”.
  17. Select “No” for the 5 year Premium Platinum Preferred Plan.
  18. Select “No” for the 1 additional free year with additional device $30/year contract.
  19. Select “No” for yet another upsell for $50 gift magicJacks.
  20. Select “No” for the international prepaid minutes upsell.
  21. You’ll probably be asked to enable auto-renew in order to receive the “Lifetime Warranty”. It costs nothing extra to do this, and you can always disable auto-renew online later. Click “Thank you, enable Auto-Renew and my Lifetime Warranty.”
  22. It’s time to activate your magicJack plus 2014. If you used an activation code provided in your package, you may not see this step. In your mailbox, find the email with the subject “magicJack account activation information”. Copy your activation code from the email and paste it into the activation code field. Click “Activate”.
  23. You may not see this screen if you already have an account password. If you don’t already have an account password you’ll be asked to create one now. Write it down and don’t forget it. This is your account password for your new phone system. Click “Submit”.
  24. This is the last activation screen, where you’ll see your number and congratulations on activation completed. Click the green button to use your new magicJack plus 2014 directly from the router. This screen and the magicJack dialpad will both automatically disappear.
  25. Disconnect your device from the usb port on your computer and connect it directly to the router, ac adapter and phone connector.
  26. You should now be able to make and receive calls on your new magicJack device.

That’s it for registration for new users of the magicJack plus 2014.

  1. I will like more information , how thi magic jack work , but don’t worry I found out.. any way thank you

    1. Rolando, the best thing I can suggest is to read through some of my posts and look at my videos. Check out some of the links in the sidebars. magicJack uses a standard called Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), used mostly for Voice of IP (VoIP) calls. There’s a lot about it all over the web if you’re interested in understanding how it works. Google can be your friend.

    2. To whom it mat concern:
I bought a magic jack plus, but I am unable to create an account. For instance, each time I put my full name, address, email, a password, there’s no summit button to click on. Please send me the information so I may create an account for the magic jack plus.
      Best regards,
      Mario Jean

  2. I was able to test my magicJackplus with a computer and it works. However, if I want to use it without the computer on, how can I do it? I have a wireless broadband. So how will my magic device able to connect to my internet thru my wireless broadband? Please help…

    1. Anita,
At the time of this posting, the magicJack plus 2014 does not have wifi capability. As I showed in the video and explained in the directions, you will have to plug the device directly into your router. At some future date, undisclosed by magicJack, we have been promised that wifi will become available via SDIO card. For now, you’ll need an ethernet cord between your mJ+ and your router.

  3. I have tried to register my new MJ but cannot – I gave three differeent email addresses and when I go back to give my code to MJ, I lose the registration page.

I am getting frustrated as I cannot install this device. Please email me to the above address as I did not finish the registration but gave three email addresses. I have not given MJ any password so I cannot talk to Support Analyst.

    1. Helen,
I don’t work for magicJack. This is a sight that aims at offering hints and suggestions where magicJack’s support line fails. You must use the email address for your magicJack account that works when you log in to my.magicjack.com. You should see your device listed under the Phones Numbers tab. Once you’re sure you have the correct email address and the correct device, get on line with chat support (Live Help tab) and tell them you’re having trouble activating your device. There is no other way to contact support — at least none that I know of. Since you’re in Florida, you should have no trouble contacting chat support from the website.

Because you’ve posted several times about the same subject, I’m aware that you’re terribly frustrated, and I can sympathize. Unfortunately, since I don’t work for magicJack, I don’t have a simple solution other than to get online with chat support. Try to phrase as many of your questions as possible so they can answer with simple yes or no answers. It will help clarify for yourself exactly what is needs to happen. When their reply is vague, ask them to rephrase. Be paitent and polite and you’ll have more luck getting answers.

      Good luck!

    1. Maria, I’m not sure why you’re having trouble. Maybe if you visit with someone on the Florida mainland you’ll be able to activate it there. I don’t know how others in Key West are fairing with magicJack activation, so I’m unable to say. It’s likely best that you log in at my.magicJack.com and chat with the folks at chat support directly. (Live support tab.) Best of luck!

      1. Hi Linda,
I might need a few more details. I don’t work for magicJack, but I can try. If you followed the video from this post, it should go like clockwork, but that is not always the case. Best of luck.

  4. registered new 2014 magic jack plus. Had the device in USB PORT OF COMPUTER. WHEN ASKED TO REGISTER/ACTIVATE i CLICKED “WITH COMPUTER” instead of WITH ROUTER.
Now I cannot use it with Router—keep getting error messages. It works only with computer on.
HOW CAN I REVERSE THE PROCESS TO ALLOW ME TO USE IT BOTH WITH OR WITHOUT COMPUTER ON?
    It’s been several frustrating days.
    Thanks
    simon

    1. Simon,
Your IP suggests that you’re trying to register and activate the device either from Italy, or perhaps from a boat in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa… I can’t be certain. I’m afraid you won’t be able to activate your device outside the US or Canada. Next time you are in either of these countries, consider trying during your visit.

If you have already activated and registered: try pulling down from “Menu” to “Switch to Telephone”. Also try changing from “Air Card (3G)” to “Normal (High Speed)” in the top left corner of the magicJack interface.

This device doesn’t work well with satellite internet.

If none of these considerations works, you may need to chat with chat support.

      Good luck!

      1. Thanks for the site, Chris. I have had Magicjack for over 5 years. I just wanted to say that the I have Exede satellite internet and the Magicjack works great. Exede has consistent speeds of about 20 mbps. I have noted that the Magicjack is affected when speeds are inconsistent – which often occurs with WiFi. By the way, Exede is very poor for gaming as it has a very high ping rate around 700 ms.

    1. Pierre,
It is unfortunate that since you live in Haiti, you probably will not be able to register and activate your magicJack from there. When you’re next in the States, that will be the best time and place to register and activate your device. Good luck!

    1. Add a tablespoon of sugar, vinegar, some lettuce and a dollop of mayo. You now have a magicJack salad. Not sure where you’re going with this Vick, but Happy Holidays.

    1. Noor,
The downloads page on this site has links to the app for both iOS and Android. Once you install the app, you’ll be given the opportunity to purchase a number — trust me. With a little persistence, all the information you need can be found on this site and or the magicJack site. Since you live in Canada, you should have little trouble activating and registering an app. Good luck.

  5. thanks for ur information, is great, now am trying to register my magigjack to start and can’t get in, help.

    1. Nelson,
You can’t register in the Dominican Republic. Next time you are visiting relatives in the US or Canada, register while you are with them.
      Good luck!

    1. Find a friend in San Diego who has one and ask them to show it to you. Facebook could help. Good luck!

  6. I just bought the magicjack+ 2014, a router and connected to the internet and now I find out there is a possibility it won’t work for me? What are my options? How do I try the router route first any way? Can someone walk me through the steps?

    1. Bill,
The router method should be easy, but it didn’t work for me. You’re supposed to plug the device into your router first, rather than in to the computer. Then go to mjreg.com. Click the green “I’m ready, Let’s Go!” button, and it should get you started. Except for me, it would not recognize my device. They may have changed their method, so now it may work. Why not give it a try? Regardless of which method you choose, you will still need to use either a computer or a tablet or a smartphone with a browser capable of browsing modern websites. Good luck!

  7. I had a MJ plus since 11/25/2013. Suddenly stop working. I was able to receive calls normally. However, I was not able to make outgoing calls. I could hear the phone ringing at the other end but, the answring party could not hear my voice. I contacted the chat room in different ocassions and chat with 14 or 15 different junior and senior agents. They all tried various methods to no solution. One agent told me that I will need to get a MJ+ replacement. I order one and I just got it over the weekend. I installed hoping that will correct the issue. No luck. The issue still the same. I like to say that the MJ+ is connected to a wall outlet on one end and connected to a router (WRTU54g-TM) on the other end via ethernet hub) I also noticed that this version of a new MJ+ has three lights that the old one never had. One is a blue light that stays solid and the second green light followed by a red light that flashes right after green light. I’m frustrated and dissappointed with a low level of knwledge that the people at MJ seem to display

    1. Have you tried different ports on the router? Typical with Linksys routers, one port will blow out in an electrical storm, while the other ports remain unfried. Another alternative: Ditch that crappy Ethernet cable that came with the device and use a standard Ethernet cable. It sounds like you’ve tried everything else.

  8. I cannot seem to be able to get my computer to recognize the majic jack go 2014. I think I have it set up but I’m not sure. I have the majic jack hooked up to my phone and then to my computer. I have a dial tone, but that’s it. I can’t plug it into a router as I am hard wired to a router that is about 300 or 400 feet. Should I plug the majic jack into the router? The directions on the box says I can hook it up the way I have it but I have been trying to get it to work for 4 days now and I really need it to do my job. Can you please help. Thank you and it is really nice that you are doing this for us dummies out here that can’t seem to activate this little bugger.

    1. If you have it plugged in using the USB port to your computer, the device should work. You should also see the new “metro” interface for the app show up on your windows or Mac computer. The windows/mac “app” interface only works when the magicJack device is plugged into the USB port of your computer. If you want to use the device connected directly to the router, use the Ethernet cord to connect to the router and the USB AC adapter to connect to wall socket. If you don’t have access to another Ethernet port in a convenient place, run another Ethernet cord from your router long enough to reach where it will be convenient for the device or the phone. Either that, or put your magicJack device next to your router and run a very long phone cord to your phone from the magicJack. Good luck!

    1. Well great! You may find you like magicJack go, magicJack plus 2014 or maybe even netTalk duo wifi, a magicJack competitor. There are a lot cheap voip options, and these few are just the surface. Do your research, and remember that when you do this, you become your own phone company support. Nobody else is going to fix it for you — unless you pay for a local geek person to come to your rescue. Best of luck!

  9. I downloaded the magic jack app on my android phone but I don’t see the selection that I should make to create an account but shows up on android tablet, what should I do??

    1. There isn’t much you can do Kemari, unless you visit the US regularly and register and activate the app from your android device while you’re here. It cannot be registered and activated in Jamaica.

    1. Lawrence, apparently you live in Monrovia, Montserrado, Liberia. You will not be able to register and activate a magicJack device while you are there. Next time you’re in the US or Canada, you could pop by a local RadioShack or Walmart and pick one up. Be sure to register and activate before you leave the country.
      Best of luck!
      Chris

  10. I would like to know how to install magicjack on my phone, when I downlaod it from the play store it is saying I need to login but I dont have an account..How to do?

    1. The app is free. The service is not. You’ll have to log in at magicJack.com and either buy a magicJack device or buy the service for the app. Additionally, since you appear to live on St. Kitts in Bassaterre, it seems unlikely you’ll be able to register and activate your service without first coming to visit the United States or Canada. Best of luck!

    1. Hi Carol,
Just to be clear – I didn’t make the app. I don’t work for magicJack. I just try to offer suggestions and tips for people using magicJack and other VoIP products. I’m glad the app is working for you!
      C

      1. Hi Dorsey,
Sorry you’re having trouble! Registration can be unpredictable in some circumstances.
If you can’t do it at home, try registering from a friend’s house. Then bring your magicJack home and it should work.
It may also help to have a second pair of eyes watching the process with you.
        Best of luck!

        Chris

    1. breanna,
On a whim, I just typed your email address that you used on my website in at my.magicJack.com’s login page and pressed the red “forgot password?” link.
magicJack then confirmed for me that it sent an email to your email address with information on how to retrieve your password. If you don’t see it in your inbox, try looking in your junk mail folder. (Remember – I don’t work for magicJack.) Best of luck!

    1. krunal,

You’ll need either a magicJack device or the android or iOS app. If you’re installing the device, use these directions. If you’re installing the app, follow the directions as suggested while in the app on your phone or tablet.

      Best of luck!

      Chris

  11. I am trying to log into magic jack on my sony xperia z and am unable to get through. I previously had an sony xperia z and i was getting along fine, there was not issue at all. Now everytime i try logging into magic jack it keep saying password not matching this email address. This really sucks. What should i do? I am trying to create a new magic jack account and am unable to do so.

    1. Curt, your question got forwarded to spam, so it took me this long to respond. I get a lot of real spam, so sifting through them can be tedious. Try logging in first using a browser, either on your phone or on a laptop at my.magicJack.com using your existing username and password. If this works, your account is still valid. If it doesn’t work, try this link to learn how to change your password. Check out whether or not your app license is lapsed. If it is, try renewing. If it’s not, have you cross-graded your Experia to a newer rooted version of the Android system since installing the app? That may have flipped a security feature that tells magicApp that the app as it is installed was actually installed on a different model phone and that someone is trying to steal your identity. If this is the case, you may have to chat with the folks at magicJack chat support. Good luck!

  12. am i already registered since i had mjplus before mynumber is 317-###-#### andi was up fo renewal 3-18-205 my mjplus went out on me and had to replace it email me if i need to do something else thamks

    1. Hi Sandra,

I don’t work for magicJack. I’ve removed your number so you don’t get random calls. I also restrict my replies to this venue. I hope you’ll understand. If you’ve got a replacement and it’s working, it sounds like you’ll be okay. Best of luck.

      Chris

  13. I downloaded magic jack on my new phone and its saying the account is not on this device! #Help

    1. You’ll need to create a magicJack account. Follow the prompts for creating an account, and everything should go through correctly. Best of luck!

      Chris

    1. It should appear in an email sent to the address you used when you registered your account. Please check your spam box. Best of luck!
      Chris

    1. Login in with your existing password at my.magicJack.com.
You’ll notice your existing device says it’s out of date.
Follow the prompts that allow you to re-activate your device.

      Best of luck!

      Chris

  14. I cannot get a reply from MJ with the 4 digit code needed to activate the device. I have tried over 10 times with several different emails. It’s not being blocked by a firewall or by an A/V program.

    Any thoughts?

    1. I actually received a six-character code. I have a spam folder on my laptop (in outlook) and a spam folder on my mail server. If you’re not using IMAP, they’re actually two different folders. Have you checked both places? Have you white-listed noreply@magicjack.com? If not, at this point, it’s time to contact chat support.

      Best of luck.

      Chris

  15. omg, ur retarded as this freaking device. never did I get registration box ,,I got a dial box..and well do to no other options I tested it. Flies to honey as they say.
Name calling seldom solves our challenges.
      May harmony find you.
      Chris

  16. I had about Magic jack app some many users confess is best online app cheapest call I decide to register now

  17. im trying to register a magic jack plus that I bought years ago as a backup .. it doesn’t let me register .. please help

    1. Annie, it’s possible you’ll need to contact magicJack chat help. It’s possible that the device may have such an old version of the firmware that magicJack doesn’t recognize it if you bought it a decade ago. You may need to download the firmware directly from magicJack. I have direct links to these files from the magicJack website on this site under the “Download” tab. Click on the download button and press the icon for your operating system, Windows or Mac. You can try installing this latest version of the software on your computer first, then try it with your very old magicJack.
