It’s been a while since I did the first part, but now that I’m finished with my thesis, I’ve finished part two. It’s rather long, but it is full of insights that I learned while putting together my magicJack.

One of the most important things I learned about setting things up the way I did was that Google voice place a crucial role in how my phone system works.

All calls – business or family – come through the main google voice line. I’m able to answer from the home phone via magicJack or via computer using Skype In. If I need to transfer the phone from one venue to another, it’s as simple as pressing a button and picking up on Skype or the magicJack phone. I like that flexibility.

The down-side has been that we get messages strewn across three different message systems: the home phone message machine, magicJack’s phone messaging system and Google voice’s messaging system. Either way, the messages get to us, but it would be nice if I could get one messaging system to take all of them – preferable Google voice.

So here is the video. Please comment or ask questions.

  1. Have had MJ Plus installed & working properly, after initial work arounds!, but not sure if I should check or worry about updates?

    1. Bill, that’s one of the reasons I set up this site. Every day at 12 noon eastern, it checks to see if the latest version has changed modification dates for the mac and windows versions. It then sends anyone on the list an alert that the firmware for the mjplus has been updated. Just click on the “Notify Me!” button at the top of the page and follow the link to subscribe.

  2. Hi
I did exactly as you have in the video but i still have a blinking red light
    can you please help?

    thanks

    1. Ben,
Since you live in Jakarta, Indonesia, there isn’t much I can do to help you register and activate. You must live in the US or Canada in order to buy the device or app. Check out this post on indicator lights to learn more about why you see the blinking red light.
Additionally, magicJack may not function well as a FAX unless you slow it down to a dreadfully-slow 9600kbps. I’m not sure how well it will work across international borders.
      Best of luck!
